Eastman Institute For Oral Health, University of Rochester: Zinc Solution Reduces Tooth Staining in SDF Treatment

In a promising breakthrough published in BMC Oral Health, EIOH researchers have found that adding a Zinc solution to teeth before Silver Diamine Fluoride (SDF) treatment significantly reduces tooth discoloration. SDF has long been recognized as an effective treatment for halting cavity progression, often used to treat young children who are at high risk for early childhood caries (ECC). Read more.

Columbia University College of Dental Medicine Celebrates 68th Birnberg Awards and Symposium

The 68th annual Birnberg Award and Research Symposium took place on April 5 and showcased the diverse student research of 53 pre- and postdoctoral dental students. The award, which was established by the Alumni Association of the Columbia University College of Dental Medicine in the early 1950s to encourage students to engage in research, features a keynote address by an eminent researcher. Read more.

Stony Brook School of Dental Medicine: Class of 2028 Pledges Commitment to Patient Well-Being at White Coat Ceremony

In front of family and friends, 46 first-year students at Stony Brook School of Dental Medicine’s Class of 2028 pledged their commitment to excellence and ethics in patient care at the annual White Coat Ceremony, held at the Sidney Gelber Auditorium on Stony Brook University’s main campus. Eighty-seven percent of the class hails from New York State, a promising figure given the school’s commitment to build up the dentistry workforce, particularly in Dental Health Professional Shortage Areas (DHPSAs). They came to the SDM from 23 undergraduate institutions, including 11 who earned their bachelor’s degree at Stony Brook University. Read more.

On May 21 and 22, Columbia University College of Dental Medicine held its annual trio of events to celebrate the accomplishments of students graduating from its pre- and postdoctoral programs. Stony Brook School of Dental Medicine: Class of 2025 Smiles Ear to Ear at Convocation Ceremony

Pride and joy brimmed and – fittingly – smiles stretched from ear to ear as Stony Brook School of Dental Medicine’s Class of 2025 proudly crossed the stage to receive their dental school degrees and advanced degree certificates at the annual convocation ceremony held at Stony Brook University’s Staller Center for the Arts. The school’s newest dentists, 47 Doctor of Dental Surgery (DDS) graduates will now continue their residency training in areas including general dentistry, oral and maxillofacial surgery, orthodontics, pediatric dentistry, periodontics and prosthodontics. Additionally, 37 residents, one doctoral student and one graduate student were feted by the event’s more than 500 attendees. Read more.

NYU College of Dentistry Celebrates Class of 2025

On Monday, May 19, 2025, the NYU Dentistry Class of 2025 – which included more than 500 candidates for the Doctor of Dental Surgery degree, Advanced Education Program certificates, MS degrees in biomaterials and in clinical research, AAS and BS degrees in dental hygiene, and Dental Assisting Program certificates – saw their dreams come true as they received their degrees and certificates before an audience of approximately 5,000 people in The Theater at Madison Square Garden. Read more.

NYU College of Dentistry Endodontics Teams Earn Two Top-10 Research Awards at AAE Meeting

At the American Academy of Endodontics (AAE) meeting in April, two second-year NYU Dentistry postgraduate endodontics teams received awards for their research presentations. Dr. Austin Whitmore and Dr. Anusha Kalaichelvan won for their oral presentation “Outcomes of Non-Surgical Retreatment Performed by a Single Endodontist in Private Practice,” with faculty mentor Dr. Lorel Burns. Dr. Daniela Lalinde and Dr. Donovan Chin won for their poster presentation, “The Healing Outcome of Apical Periodontitis Among Patients With Periapical Osteoperiostitis: An Observational Study,” with faculty mentor Dr. Maria Mora. Read more.

Stony Brook School of Dental Medicine: Maddalena Named 2025 Distinguished Alumnus Award Recipient

Gregory Maddalena, DDS ’05, GPR ’06, chief dental officer for Sun River Health in New Paltz, New York, the largest network of oral health Federally Qualified Health Centers (FQHC) in the state, is the 2025 recipient of the School of Dental Medicine’s Distinguished Alumni Award. Maddalena was presented the award by Stacy Reisfeld, DDS ’88, president of the SDM’s alumni chapter, at the Class of 2028 White Coat Ceremony, held at Stony Brook University’s Student Activities Center. Read more.
