Columbia University College of Dental Medicine: HRSA Renews CDM’s Community-based Dental Partnership Grant

Columbia University College of Dental Medicine researchers have received continued support through the Health Resources and Services Administration Ryan White HIV/AIDS program. The Community-based Dental Partnership Program (a part of the HRSA initiative, has as its goal increasing access to oral health care for people living with HIV by providing education and clinical training for oral health care providers, especially those practicing in community-based settings. Read more.

University at Buffalo School of Dental Medicine, UB Athletics Collaborate on Custom Mouth Guards for Student-Athletes

With football season on the horizon, the UB Bulls are focused on getting players ready for game time. This year, the pre-season preparation included a collaboration with the School of Dental Medicine to provide UB’s football players with custom mouth guards — in a vibrant shade of UB Blue. Approximately 55 student-athletes received custom mouth guards prepared by 13 students who volunteered their time before the start of the fall semester. The students traveled to UB Stadium with boxes of alginate, trays and all the supplies needed to take impressions for the team. Read more.

Stony Brook School of Dental Medicine: Endodontics Resident Receives Prestigious Freedom Scholarship

Chloe Beninati, DDS/MPH ’22, a second-year resident in Stony Brook School of Dental Medicine’s Advanced Dental Education Program in Endodontics, has been awarded the prestigious Foundation for Endodontics and Dentsply Sirona Freedom Scholarship. Beginning this year, the $50,000 scholarship will be given annually to three second- or third-year endodontics residents at programs accredited by the Commission on Dental Accreditation (CODA), helping to offset the cost of their tuition. Read more.

Touro College of Dental Medicine at New York Medical College Class of 2026 Steps Into the Clinic

On May 31, members of Touro College of Dental Medicine’s class of 2026 donned their white coats in a celebration at Purchase College’s Center for the Performing Arts. The coating, as it’s colloquially known, marks their move from the classroom and simulation lab to the clinic, where they will continue their training, treating patients under faculty supervision. University at Buffalo School of Dental Medicine Welcomes Class of 2028

On Aug. 9, the School of Dental Medicine held the White Coat Ceremony for 95 students in the Class of 2028, welcoming them into the Doctor of Dental Surgery (DDS) program and as future oral health professionals. The White Coat Ceremony is an annual rite of passage for incoming students that marks the beginning of their dental school journey. Students are presented with a white coat, a symbol of clinical service and care, and recite the dentist’s pledge in unison. Read more.

NYU College of Dentistry Study Reveals Connection Between Periodontal Inflammation and Microbial Changes in the Gut

A new study by NYU Dentistry researchers published in the journal Microorganisms finds that periodontal inflammation and oral bacteria contribute to gut bacterial changes. “In our study, we hypothesized that periodontal inflammation and its associated subgingival dysbiosis contribute to gut dysbiosis, even in subjects free of known gut disorders,” said Angela Kamer, DMD, MS, PhD, professor in the Ashman Department of Periodontology & Implant Dentistry and the study’s lead author. Read more.

Eastman Institute For Oral Health, University of Rochester Study Shows Dental Residents Find Virtual Learning Positive and Effective

While most dental residents found virtual learning during the COVID-19 pandemic to be effective and have significant potential for continued use, most faculty did not, according to a new study published in Dentistry Journal. The study, co-authored by experts at Eastman Institute for Oral Health and the University of Rochester, surveyed 46 dental residents and 10 faculty members from June to August 2021, using questionnaires to obtain data on demographics, perceptions of virtual learning, burnout and regulatory focus theory (RFT) types. Read more.

NYU College of Dentistry Research: Lemurs Use Long-Term Memory, Smell, and Social Cues to Find Food

“We can learn so much from primates that we can apply to teaching our students,” said Dr. Elena Cunningham, anthropologist, clinical professor of molecular pathobiology, and a course director of the NYU Dentistry’s innovative INBDE prep course. A new study by Dr. Cunningham and colleagues shows that lemurs use smell, social cues, and long-term memory to locate hidden fruit — a combination of factors that may have deep evolutionary roots.” Read more.

Dr. Mijin Choi, clinical professor of prosthodontics and director of the Jonathan & Maxine Ferencz Advanced Education Program in Prosthodontics at NYU Dentistry, has been elected President of the Academy of Prosthodontics. Founded in 1918, the Academy of Prosthodontics is the oldest specialty organization in prosthetic dentistry, boasting a Fellowship of distinguished clinicians, educators, and leaders of the profession from around the world. Read more.

Stony Brook School of Dental Medicine: Tuttle Named Associate Dean for Finance and Administration

A proven healthcare executive on Long Island and beyond, Kevin Tuttle, MHA, has been appointed associate dean for finance and administration at Stony Brook School of Dental Medicine. In this position, Tuttle will oversee the finance and administration, staff human resources, information and technology and facilities of the school, working with the school’s leadership to maintain a responsive financial and administrative organization. Read more.

University at Buffalo School of Dental Medicine Professors’ Forensic Work Included in new Volume of ‘Unsolved Mysteries’

When a red cooler arrived in the forensics lab at the University at Buffalo School of Dental Medicine in early 2015, no one imagined its contents would lead to a UB professor’s appearance on “Unsolved Mysteries” almost a decade later. The cooler, which the Pennsylvania State Police delivered to Squire Hall, contained an unidentified severed head that a teenager discovered in the woods in Economy, Pennsylvania, a suburb of Pittsburgh. The UB dental forensics team was tasked with determining if the head belonged to a torso in a broken-into mausoleum in Uniontown, Pennsylvania. Read more.
