NYU College of Dentistry: White Coat Ceremony

On Tuesday, September 5, NYU Dentistry held a White Coat Ceremony for the DDS Class of 2027 at David Geffen Hall in Lincoln Center. The happy occasion underscored the College’s commitment to celebrating this essential touchpoint in the students’ journeys to become doctors. A total of 375 students received their white coats from senior mentors and mentors as family members and friends looked on. Read more.

Stony Brook School of Dental Medicine: D3 Student Named DTA Foundation National Scholarship Recipient

Elina Nourmand, a third-year student at Stony Brook School of Dental Medicine, has been awarded a $10,000 scholarship from the Dental Trade Alliance Foundation (DTA) and Darby Dental. Nominated by the Office of the Dean to represent Stony Brook, Nourmand was selected from an applicant pool of representatives from dental schools nationwide. Read more.

Eastman Institute For Oral Health, University of Rochester: A Passion for Education and Research Led Kuwait Dentist to Train at Eastman Institute, Earn PhD

When Naemah Alkhars, a junior faculty member at Kuwait University, was pursuing professional growth and development back in 2015, she chose Eastman Institute for Oral Health’s unique four-year faculty development program. Now, eight years later, she has become the first foreign-trained EIOH resident to earn her PhD at the University of Rochester. Read more.

Columbia University College of Dental Medicine: Momen-Heravi Receives Prestigious NIGMS Grant to Investigate Exosome Biogenesis and the Role of Non-coding RNAs

Fatemeh Momen-Heravi, associate professor at Columbia University College of Dental Medicine and founder and director of the head and neck cancer research group at the Herbert Irving Comprehensive Cancer Center, is the recipient of a National Institute of General Medical Sciences Maximizing Investigators’ Research Award (MIRA), making her one of the few researchers across all disciplines to receive this prestigious award. Dr. Momen-Heravi is also the first dentist-scientist to achieve this honor. Read more.

NYU College of Dentistry: “Gates of Heaven” Calcium Channel Drives Oral Cancer Pain and Growth

New research from Drs. Ga-Yeon Son and Rodrigo Lacruz shows that an essential protein that acts as a gatekeeper for calcium entering cells promotes the growth of oral cancer and generates pain. ORAI calcium channels — named after the three sisters in Greek mythology who guarded the gates of heaven at Mount Olympus — play an important role controlling how much calcium enters cells. Read more.

Robert M. Peskin, DDS ’77, clinical associate professor in the Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery’s Division of Hospital Dentistry at Stony Brook School of Dental Medicine, has been named president of the American Institute of Parliamentarians (AIP), an organization committed to promoting decision-making and policy implementation founded upon sound democratic principles in dentistry and other fields. Read more.

NYU College of Dentistry: Introducing NYU Dentistry’s Academic Societies

Effective July 2023, NYU Dentistry’s 14 group practices transitioned to a structure of 14 academic societies named for important people in the history of dentistry. Once matriculated, all DDS students are assigned to one of the 14 academic societies and remain members of that academic society throughout their time at the College. Each society is led by a Senior Mentor who helps students navigate the four years of the curriculum and provides them with mentorship during their clinical education. Read more.

Touro College of Dental Medicine at New York Medical College: Dr. George Shepley, President of the American Dental Association, Visits Touro College of Dental Medicine
