NYU College of Dentistry Pain Research Center Receives NIH Grant to Study Chemotherapy-Related Pain

The National Institutes of Health has awarded a five-year, $4.63 million grant to NYU Dentistry researchers to study chemotherapy-induced painful peripheral neuropathy (CIPPN). The funding is part of the NIH’s Helping to End Addiction Long-term (HEAL) Initiative, which supports the development of safe and effective therapeutics to treat pain in an effort to end the opioid crisis. “Our hope is to not only establish Schwann cells as a major contributor to chemotherapy-induced painful peripheral neuropathy, but to also investigate how the cells can be targeted for treating this painful condition,” said Dr. Yi Ye, associate professor of oral & maxillofacial surgery and associate director of the NYU Dentistry Translational Research Center, who is co-leading the study with an interdisciplinary research team. Read more.

Over the last decade, a number of U.S. clinics have marketed stem cell products directly to consumers as purported treatment for a host of diseases and injuries. Columbia University College of Dental Medicine Professor Is Recipient of Research Grant

Dr. Karim El Kholy, associate professor at the division of Periodontics at Columbia University’s College of Dental Medicine, has been named the 2024 recipient of the Colin Richman Family Perio-Ortho Award, which is given by the American Academy of Periodontology (AAP) Foundation.
