NYU College of Dentistry to Host Disability and Health Policy Symposium on Nov. 13

NYU College of Dentistry will host its third AHEAD symposium—Achieving Health Equity through Access for All with Disabilities—on Wednesday, Nov. 13, 2024. The virtual event will gather policymakers, experts, and advocates to discuss improving oral health care for people with disabilities. Two panel discussions will address the importance of integrated care in ensuring optimal health outcomes and innovative support services. As digital technology continues to gain momentum in dentistry, Eastman Institute for Oral Health has been working diligently to establish a Center of Excellence in this area. Digital technology is nothing new for Eastman. University at Buffalo School of Dental Medicine: Oral Biology, Biochemistry Professors Receive $2.2 Million Grant to Find Ways to Repair Salivary Glands

Radiation therapy, a common treatment for some oral cancers, can leave a patient’s salivary glands so damaged that even talking is difficult. Meanwhile, diseases such as Sjogren’s, which eradicates moisture from many of the body’s glands, can compromise the amount of saliva created in the mouth and also hamper speech and swallowing. Read more.

NYU College of Dentistry’s Dr. Paulina Ramirez Garcia Awarded NIDCR K99/R00 Grant to Study PAR 2 Trafficking and Signaling in Oral Cancer Pain

Dr. Paulina Ramirez Garcia, a postdoctoral fellow in the laboratory of Dr. Donna Albertson and Dr. Brian Schmidt at NYU Dentistry, has been awarded a highly competitive Pathway to Independence Award (K99/R00) from the National Institutes of Health (NIH). Funded by the National Institute of Dental and Craniofacial Research (NIDCR), this prestigious award will provide $1,018,403 over five years for Dr. Ramirez Garcia’s investigation into the trafficking of protease-activated receptor 2 (PAR 2) in oral cancer and its role in related pain mechanisms. Read more.

University at Buffalo School of Dental Medicine Receives Insight Into Diversity Magazine 2024 HEED Award

For the second consecutive year, the University at Buffalo School of Dental Medicine has received the Health Professions Higher Education Excellence in Diversity (HEED) Award from Insight Into Diversity magazine, the oldest and largest diversity-focused publication in higher education. As a recipient of the 2024 Health Professions HEED Award—a national honor recognizing U.S. health colleges and universities that demonstrate an outstanding commitment to diversity and inclusion—the UB School of Dental Medicine will be featured, along with 70 other recipients, in the November/ December 2024 issue of Insight Into Diversity magazine. Read more.

Columbia University College of Dental Medicine: James Fine DMD Receives NYCDA Commendation

James Fine, DMD, professor of dental medicine, attending dentist on the Presbyterian Hospital Dental Service, chief practice director for faculty practices at the Columbia University College of Dental Medicine, and senior associate dean for postdoctoral academic and student affairs at CDM is the 2024 recipient of the Henry Spenadel Award. The award, the highest honor that the New York County Dental Society bestows, is named for Dr. Henry Spenadel, who bequeathed the New York County Dental Society (which was then known as the First District Dental Society) an annual endowment to be used for the advancement of education in dentistry. Read more.

Stony Brook School of Dental Medicine: Romanos Receives Outstanding Educator Award from Academy of Laser Dentistry

Georgios Romanos, professor in the Department of Periodontics and Endodontics at Stony Brook School of Dental Medicine, was the recipient of this year’s Glenda Payas Outstanding Educator Award, given annually by the Academy of Laser Dentistry. Established in 2021, the Payas Award recognizes individuals who have demonstrated excellence in education and leadership throughout their careers, especially acknowledging original research, published articles, volunteer participation and years in education across numerous environments. Read more.

University at Buffalo School of Dental Medicine: Araujo Reflects on First 18 Months as Dental School Dean

Despite growing up in the city of Salvador in the northeastern part of Brazil, some 5,000 miles away from Buffalo, Marcelo W.B. Araujo, dean of the School of Dental Medicine, says he considers Buffalo and UB home. For a budding periodontist in the 1990s, Araujo says UB was his No. 1 choice for graduate work. Read more.

Stony Brook School of Dental Medicine: Dean Lloyd Appointed to Serve as a Commissioner on the Commission on Dental Accreditation

Patrick Lloyd, DDS, MS, dean of Stony Brook School of Dental Medicine, was elected by the American Dental Education Association’s House of Delegates to serve on the Commission on Dental Accreditation (CODA), at its annual session in March. His appointment was approved by the American Dental Association’s House of Delegates during the SmileCon 2024 annual meeting, in New Orleans, Louisiana, in October. Read more.

University at Buffalo School of Dental Medicine Names Grace De Souza as New Chair of Restorative Dentistry

Grace De Souza, DDS, PhD,  professor in the Department of Comprehensive Dentistry at the University of Louisville (UL) School of Dentistry, has been named the new chair of the Department of Restorative Dentistry in the University at Buffalo School of Dental Medicine, effective Jan. 2. When she joins the faculty, she will also teach courses as a professor of comprehensive dentistry. Read more.

NYU College of Dentistry Dedicates New Apa Aesthetic Suite

On Monday, October 28th, NYU College of Dentistry held a dedication ceremony for the new Apa Aesthetic Suite, a state-of-the-art clinical facility located on the first floor of the College. The suite—made possible by a transformational gift from alumnus Dr. Michael Apa, ’03—is now the first permanent home for aesthetic dentistry education at NYU, housing the newly renamed Apa Advanced Clinical Fellowship in Aesthetics and the DDS Apa Honors Program in Aesthetic Dentistry. Read more.
