University at Buffalo School of Dental Medicine Breaks Into Top 10 in U.S. Dental Research
The University at Buffalo ranks among the top 10 U.S. dental institutions to receive research funding from the National Institute of Dental and Craniofacial Research (NIDCR). The rankings, released recently by NIDCR, show that UB School of Dental Medicine researchers received a combined $5,652,798 million during the institute’s 2022 fiscal year. Read more.
Columbia University College of Dental Medicine: Elected Officials, Community Members Turn Out to Help Launch Columbia’s New Mobile Health Clinic
The Columbia University College of Dental Medicine’s mobile dentistry program is poised to double its capacity to deliver health screenings and low-cost dental care to residents of Northern Manhattan and the Bronx with the introduction of a new mobile health clinic, which has been generously funded by a $500,000 grant from the Mother Cabrini Health Foundation. Read more.

NYU College of Dentistry: Dental Student Leadership Institute (DDSLI) Holds Inaugural Symposium “Leadership for the Future of Dentistry and Oral Health”
On Monday, April 24, the NYU Dentistry Center for Oral Health Policy and Management hosted the DDSLI Symposium, an interactive forum led by the inaugural class of DDSLI Scholars. The DDSLI is a three-year, curricular-based program comprised of seminars, workshops, internships, shadowing of leaders, mentoring, and leadership roles for DDS students seeking a special focus on leadership to enrich their DDS student experience and their future careers. Read more.
Stony Brook School of Dental Medicine Holds Annual Sreebny Lectureship and Research Symposium
More than 40 Stony Brook School of Dental Medicine students and residents participated in the 2023 Leo and Mickey Sreebny Lectureship and School of Dental Medicine Research Symposium, held at the Student Activities Center on April 26. Stephen Walker, PhD, interim dean of research at the SDM, bestowed awards to six students and residents for their exceptional research and presentations. Read more.
Touro College of Dental Medicine at New York Medical College Student Presents Research at AADOCR/ CADR Conference
Third-year Touro College of Dental Medicine (TCDM) student Rachel Sebastian delivered an oral poster presentation at this year’s American Association for Dental, Oral and Craniofacial Research/Canadian Association of Dental Research (AADOCR/CADR) Annual Meeting on March 15-18 in Portland, Oregon. Rachel presented on “Factors Affecting Early Implant Failure Following a Fully Guided Surgical Protocol,” as part of the conference’s Student Competition for Advancing Dental Research and Its Application (SCADA). Read more.

University at Buffalo School of Dental Medicine: You, Your Teeth, and Type 2 Diabetes
If you’re a health care provider treating people with Type 2 diabetes (T2D), University at Buffalo researcher Mehmet A. Eskan has this suggestion for you: check your patients’ teeth. In a study published in PLOS ONE on April 14, Eskan demonstrates that patients with T2D who have full chewing function have a blood glucose level that is significantly lower than patients whose ability to chew effectively is impaired. Read more.

Stony Brook School of Dental Medicine Orthodontics Resident Receives AAOF Research Aid Award
Second-year orthodontics resident Heather Ercolano, DDS ’21, has received the American Association of Orthodontists Foundation (AAOF) Research Aid Award for her proposal that will examine facial soft tissue changes following orthopedic maxillary expansion. Ercolano’s study, which is already underway, will investigate the side effects of treating transverse maxillary deficiencies that are treated with palate expanders, including the widening of the maxilla and nasal cavity, and potential soft tissue expansion of the nose, lips and cheeks. Read more.

Stony Brook School of Dental Medicine: Longtime Orthodontics Professor Named 2023 SDM Distinguished Alumnus
Robert Schindel, DDS ’90, a decorated figure in orthodontics and longtime faculty member at Stony Brook School of Dental Medicine, has been presented with the 2023 School of Dental Medicine Distinguished Alumni Award. Schindel has been a clinical professor at his alma mater since 1994, providing mentorship for students in the orthodontics, pediatric dentistry and oral biology and pathology residency programs, as well as the undergraduate dental program. Read more.
Eastman Institute For Oral Health, University of Rochester: Dr. Cynthia Wong Named Chair, Eastman Institute Pediatric Dentistry 
After an extensive national search, Associate Professor Cynthia Wong DMD, MS (Pedo ’13, MS ‘15) has been named chair of Pediatric Dentistry, Eastman Institute for Oral Health (EIOH). She has been serving as interim chair since July and her permanent appointment is effective immediately. Read more.
The EIOH program was recently named Best in the U.S., according to Universities.com 2022 rankings. Dr. Wong has been integral in enriching the program over the last several years, including increased collaborations throughout the University of Rochester Medical Center, curriculum changes to emphasize interdisciplinary collaborations, an enhanced recruitment process and incorporating digital technologies in the classroom and the clinic.
