Touro College of Dental Medicine at New York Medical College: Award-Winning Mentorship in Touro’s College of Dental Medicine Leads to Research Excellence

As the Director of Research at the Touro University College of Dental Medicine, Jaffer A. Shariff D.D.S, M.P.H, D.P.H, M.S. has guided more than 50 research projects to completion; organized and hosted the school’s research fair; and personally mentored dozens of students. In March, his work was recognized by the American Association for Dental, Oral, and Craniofacial Research when he received the organization’s National Student Research Group Faculty Mentor Award. Read more.

University at Buffalo School of Dental Medicine: Pathway Programs Prepare Students for Dental School

Eliese Maybee graduated in May from UB with a degree in psychology and a minor in Indigenous studies. Now, she’s in the process of applying to dental schools with the hope of returning to UB to don a white coat in fall 2026. Maybee, who grew up on a Seneca Nation reservation in Cattaraugus County, knows firsthand the crucial need for dentists in rural and Indigenous communities — and especially dentists who reflect the same background as their patients. Read more.

NYU College of Dentistry: HSDA Chapter Hosts the Hispanic Student Regional Conference

On Thursday, June 20th, NYU Dentistry’s chapter of the Hispanic Student Dental Association (HSDA) hosted the Hispanic Student Regional Conference in 433 First Avenue — a first for the chapter and the opening event for the annual session weekend for the Hispanic Dental Association (HDA), the national organization. Over 275 students, faculty, dental school deans, and industry representatives attended the opening event, which included a recruitment fair, a GPR/AEGD/PG panel, a campus tour, and a pre-dental hands-on program. Read more.

Columbia University College of Dental Medicine Faculty Member Louis Mandel Publishes Exhaustive Reference on Salivary Gland Disorders

Dr. Louis Mandel, who has served as a professor of oral and maxillofacial surgery at Columbia University College of Dental Medicine since 1951, has published Clinical Management of Salivary Gland Disorders, a complete reference guide for the totality of salivary gland disease. Dr. Mandel is currently the director of the Salivary Gland Center at Columbia University Irving Medical Center. Read more.

Eastman Institute For Oral Health, University of Rochester Studies Present New Data About Clear Aligner Therapy Outcomes

For the last five years, Dr. Dimitrios Michelogiannakis, Eastman Institute for Oral Health associate professor, and his team have been working to gather evidence to help advance the knowledge base about outcomes of clear aligner therapy, which has gained increasing popularity in recent years. Clear aligner therapy, or CAT, is appealing to adults and children because they are less obvious than braces, they’re more comfortable and are removable while eating and brushing. Read more.

University at Buffalo School of Dental Medicine: At age 81, UB Professor Still Helping to Launch Orthodontic Residents Into Careers

When Stephen Aszkler, DDS, opened his Orchard Park orthodontics practice in 1973, metal braces were wrapped around each individual tooth, X-rays were developed in darkrooms, and few adults opted for orthodontic treatment. Today, in the era of ceramic brackets, clear braces, digitized scans, and a whopping 27% of U.S. orthodontic patients being voter age or older, Aszkler not only keeps up with the changes, but he also passes along his expertise to future generations of orthodontists at the University at Buffalo. Read more.

NYU College of Dentistry: Dr. Sebastiano Andreana Named Director of the NYU Dentistry Center for Implant Dentistry

Sebastiano Andreana, DDS, MS, a dentist and dental implantology researcher and educator, has been named inaugural director of the soon-to-open Center for Implant Dentistry at NYU Dentistry, effective July 1, 2024. Dr. Andreana received a Doctor of Dental Surgery degree from the University of Rome “La Sapienza” in 1990 and a master’s degree in Oral Science from UB in 1995. Read more.

Stony Brook School of Dental Medicine: Alumni’s Endowed Scholarship to Help Fund Education for HPSA Students

To say that Stony Brook School of Dental Medicine shaped Mary Truhlar’s life and career trajectory would be an understatement. It was in the school’s lecture halls, laboratories and clinic where Truhlar’s passion for dentistry materialized and grew as a dental student. Along the way, she met numerous lifelong friends and colleagues, including her future husband, Rich, who was a year ahead of her. Their family took root in the Three Village community, and it’s where the Truhlars made an impact as academics and dental care providers for more than three decades. Read more.

NYU College of Dentistry Launches Faculty Leadership Institute

From Monday to Wednesday, June 10th to 12th, 24 full-time faculty members participated in the inaugural Faculty Leadership Institute, an initiative of the NYU Dentistry Center for Oral Health Policy and Management. Participants in the intensive leadership program explored practical strategies for career advancement and were provided tools to navigate internal and external opportunities and confidently step into new leadership positions. Read more.

University at Buffalo School of Dental Medicine: Tools of Dental Professor’s Bitemark Research Included in Smithsonian Exhibition

Mary Bush, a forensic dentist and associate professor of restorative dentistry in the University at Buffalo School of Dental Medicine, has devoted more than a decade of her career to refuting that bitemark evidence can determine a suspect’s guilt. Now, tools used in her groundbreaking research will be included in a yearlong exhibition at the Smithsonian’s National Museum of American History in Washington, D.C. Read more.

NYU Dentistry Student Government Raises Over $4,000 for the NYU Oral Cancer Center

During the 2023-24 academic year, the NYU Dentistry Student Government challenged all student clubs to undertake a fundraising initiative to benefit the NYU Oral Cancer Center. Students rose to the challenge and held several successful events, including a merchandise sale led by the Class of 2025 Council and an Oral Cancer Basketball Tournament, sponsored by Student Government and helmed by former Community Outreach Chair, D3 student Gal Sahar. Over $4,000 was raised and donated.
