NYU College of Dentistry Helps Address Oral Health Crises Faced by City’s Migrants

By the end of 2023, more than 110,000 migrants arrived in New York City, said Rose Amable, DDS, clinical assistant professor of pediatric dentistry at NYU Dentistry. Additionally, up to 1,000 asylum-seekers are arriving in New York City each week. Many of them are parents and caregivers with young children who have entered the public school system. NYU Dentistry has stepped up to overcome the barriers to care for migrant children through outreach events, school-based care and follow-up care at the college. Read more.

Columbia University College of Dental Medicine: Helen Lu Elected to the National Academy of Inventors

Biomedical Engineer Helen H. Lu has just been named a 2023 National Academy of Inventors (NAI) Fellow. Lu, a leading researcher in regenerative materials and tissue engineering, was elected for her “prolific spirit of innovation in creating or facilitating outstanding inventions that have made a tangible impact on the quality of life, economic development, and welfare of society.” Read more.

NYU College of Dentistry Creates BS in Dental Hygiene with Concentration in Dental Science

NYU Dentistry is introducing a bachelor of science (BS) in dental hygiene with a new concentration in dental science, preparing students for careers as healthcare providers and providing a pathway for those interested in applying to dental school or other graduate health programs. This new degree concentration will follow a rigorous curriculum that includes science, math, and liberal arts courses—many through NYU’s College of Arts and Science—that are prerequisites for applying to dental school, medical school, and other health degree programs. Read more.

Touro College of Dental Medicine alumna Sara Rosen is to become an Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeon at the Tripler Army Medical Center. Sara Rosen, DDS, recalls the moment when she realized she wanted to become an oral and maxillofacial surgeon. On Saturday, December 2, 2023, a team of NYU Dentistry students and alumni volunteered at the 2023 Special Olympics New York City Peter Aquilone Winter Classic at the Javits Center, completing dental screenings, fabricating athletic mouthguards, applying fluoride varnish, and providing oral health instruction to event participants. Dr. Rose Amable, clinical assistant professor of pediatric dentistry, and Prof. Rina Nowka, clinical instructor of dental hygiene and dental assisting, led the team. Read more.
