University at Buffalo School of Dental Medicine Dental Vans Serve Vulnerable Populations Thanks to Cabrini Funding

Faculty and staff in the School of Dental Medicine (SDM) are acutely aware of disparities in oral health care, which particularly affect low-income children, rural residents and individuals who struggle with mental health, disabilities and housing. The dental school has been making strides over the past two decades to rectify some of these disparities through its S-miles To Go program, which provides dental care through two state-of-the-art mobile dental clinics in rural and urban communities in Western New York. Read more.

Stony Brook School of Dental Medicine Class of 2024 Secures Highly Competitive Residencies in New York and Beyond

The future recently came into focus for Stony Brook School of Dental Medicine Class of 2024, as all 41 of its members who sought a residency position successfully secured one. Additionally, one fourth-year student will enter private practice upon earning their DDS, and another has committed to a residency with the United States Navy Dental Corps. Read more.

NYU College of Dentistry Students Participate in Global Health Care Leaders Program in Florence, Italy

As part of the NYU Dentistry Global Health Care Leaders program, a cohort of D4 students traveled to the NYU Global Academic Center in Florence, Italy, in November and engaged with governmental, professional, and industry leaders to explore complex issues comparing dentistry as it is practiced, financed, and regulated in the United States and Europe. Learn more.

Eastman Institute For Oral Health, University of Rochester: High Doses of Medication Led to Rampant Tooth Decay and Depression for Local Man

It all started with severe side effects to prednisone. Joe Ferrari was on high doses of it for a viral illness in 2017. “But then I started to have hip pain, and ended up having a hip replacement a year later because of what the steroids had done to my bones,” Joe Ferrari, 68, said. Columbia University College of Dental Medicine Professor Develops Clinical Decision Tool for HIV Testing in Dental Settings

The Columbia University College of Dental Medicine has been at the forefront of medical dental integration in electronic health records since 2020, when the College began using the Epic Electronic Health Record in concert with Columbia University Irving Medical Center. A single EHR for each patient means that patients and providers have a comprehensive view of patient health in a record that treats oral health as an element of systemic health. Read more.

Eastman Institute For Oral Health, University of Rochester: Dr. Jin Xiao Tapped for ADA Council on Scientific Affairs

The American Dental Association has appointed Eastman Institute for Oral Health Associate Professor Jin Xiao, DDS, PhD (GenDen ’13, GPR ’14) to its Council on Scientific Affairs. The prestigious Council is comprised of about 20 renowned U.S. oral health researchers and clinicians who assist the ADA in developing policies that sustain the science basis of the dental profession, while supporting product standards and evaluation, research priorities, safety and efficacy of patient procedures, the ADA Seal of Acceptance Program and much more. Read more.

Columbia University College of Dental Medicine: Marc Michalowicz DDS Inducted into CUIMC’s Academy of Community and Public Service

Marc W. Michalowicz, DDS, MSc, an assistant professor of dental medicine at the Columbia University College of Dental Medicine, and inaugural director of Management of Vulnerable Populations, was inducted into the Columbia University Irving Medical Center’s Academy of Community and Public Service in a ceremony held on January 30. Dr. John Grbic, director of the Division of Foundational Sciences at CDM, welcomed Dr. Michalowicz into the ACPS. Read more.

NYU College of Dentistry: Dr. Fernando Neves Hugo Named Chair, Department of Epidemiology and Health Promotion at NYU Dentistry

Fernando Neves Hugo, DDS, MSc, PhD, a dentist and internationally known dental public health researcher and educator, has been named chair of the Department of Epidemiology and Health Promotion at NYU Dentistry, effective April 1, 2024. Dr. Hugo has collaborated with research institutions and dental schools around the world, applying epidemiologic and big data methods to study global oral health, social determinants of oral health, oral and oropharyngeal cancer, and the relationship between nutrition and oral diseases. Read more.

Stony Brook School of Dental Medicine Appoints Howe Associate Dean for Clinical Operations

Following a nationwide search, Stony Brook School of Dental Medicine has appointed Brian J. Howe, DMD, MS, as its new associate dean of clinical operations and patient care. Dr. Howe most recently served as a clinical associate professor in the Department of Family Dentistry, as well as the director of clinics, at the University of Iowa College of Dentistry in Iowa City, Iowa. Read more.

The University at Buffalo student chapter of the American Academy of Developmental Medicine and Dentistry (AADMD) is highlighting the fashion flair and creative talents of individuals of all abilities on Saturday, Jan. 27, during the UB Dental Inclusive Fashion and Talent Show.
