Touro College of Dental Medicine at New York Medical College: New Fellowship Will Train TCDM Grad to Treat Patients with Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities
This one-year fellowship program focuses on advanced training in providing care for people with special needs, particularly those with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD). “This gap we are seeing in dentistry and dental education is widespread,” said Jonathan Teyan, Chief Operating Officer for NYSADC. “New York’s State’s six public and private academic dental centers, including Touro College of Dental Medicine, want to ensure that we are doing everything we can to fill these holes and that begins with providing new dentists with the skills they need to properly care for these patients.” Read more.
Eastman Institute For Oral Health, University of Rochester Selected for $3.5M Program to Establish Faculty Development Center
The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services’ Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA) selected the Eastman Institute for Oral Health (EIOH), University of Rochester Medical Center, to collaboratively establish a first-of-its-kind Primary Care Dental Faculty Development Center. The Center will serve as a resource and training hub for junior primary care dental faculty in the U.S., preparing them to become interprofessional clinical educators capable of addressing issues of diversity and health equity, as well as leaders in primary care dentistry. Read more.

If you’re a smoker, your dentist may notice the effects. “We see substantial changes in the mouth from smoking, such as yellow teeth, plaque, and receding gums,” says David Albert, DDS, MPH, associate professor of dental medicine and health policy at Columbia’s College of Dental Medicine and the Mailman School of Public Health. Read more.
NYU College of Dentistry: New Life for a Cancer Drug That Reprograms Pain Pathways to Treat Chronic Pain
Researchers are closer to developing a safe and effective non-opioid pain reliever after a study showed that a new compound they created reduces the sensation of pain by regulating a biological channel linked to pain. The National Institutes of Health estimates 100 million people in the U.S. suffer from chronic pain. Approximately 21-29% of patients prescribed opioids for chronic pain misuse them and 8-12% of people using an opioid for chronic pain develop an opioid use disorder, according to the National Institute on Drug Abuse. In 2019, nearly 50,000 people in the U.S. died from opioid-involved overdoses. Read more.
Eastman Institute For Oral Health, University of Rochester: Ventilation is Critical to Battling Covid
As dentists and other healthcare providers continue to navigate the COVID pandemic and the emerging variants, an easy-to-use tool is now available to help them conveniently and accurately assess the ventilation rates of their treatment and waiting rooms. Eastman Institute for Oral Health research published in the Journal of Dentistry showed that if a room’s ventilation rate is low, respiratory aerosol particles can remain in the indoor air for a long time, making it critical to facilitate respiratory aerosol removal from the indoor environment to minimize potential exposures of airborne viruses such as Covid to patients and providers. Read more.

NYU College of Dentistry Receives Grant from United Concordia Dental Charitable Fund to Support Veterans Oral Care Access Resource
New York University College of Dentistry (NYU Dentistry) has received a significant grant from United Concordia Dental Charitable Fund in support of its Veterans Oral Care Access Resource (VOCARE). VOCARE is part of the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) pilot program, VETSmile: Connecting Veterans with Dentists in their Communities. The goal of the program is to improve Veterans’ health by increasing access to dental services for enrolled Veterans who are not eligible for dental services through the VA. Read more.

Touro College of Dental Medicine Hosts 5th Annual Gala Honoring Distinguished Leadership in Challenging Times Setting Record-Breaking Numbers for Charitable Donations and Number of Contributors Benefiting Student Scholarships and Patient Care
Last month, Touro College of Dental Medicine (TCDM) celebrated its fifth annual Gala. The event, held at The Rockleigh in New Jersey, saw partners, friends, faculty, alumni and current students of TCDM, brought together for the purpose of honoring Distinguished Leadership in Challenging Times, and to raise funds in support of both student scholarships, and patient care at Touro Dental Health, the school’s 32,000-square-foot clinical teaching facility. Read more.
