New York State Funds Dental Fellowship to Address Oral Health Disparities
The New York State Academic Dental Centers applauds Governor Kathy Hochul and the New York State Legislature for funding NYSADC’s Fellowship to Address Oral Health Disparities in the FY2O23 budget at $750,000. The goal of the program is to increase access to dental care for New Yorkers with intellectual and developmental disabilities (I/DD).
NYSADC’s intensive year-long program provides fellows who have completed dental school and a residency program with hands-on experience treating people with I/DD under the supervision of faculty with deep expertise in special needs dentistry. Additionally, fellows have teaching and research responsibilities. Upon completion of the program, fellows commit to providing care for people with special needs for at least one year in New York State.

NYU Dentistry Convenes 2nd AHEAD Symposium on Access to and Care for People with Disabilities
AHEAD — Achieving Health Equity through Access for All with Disabilities — brought a distinguished group of disability, health care, and policy experts to the table to discuss the steps needed to further advance a more equitable health care environment for people with disabilities. Speakers addressed issues including barriers to accessing oral health care, reimbursement policy, and fostering a new generation of dental practitioners prepared to care for patients with disabilities. Read more.

NYU College of Dentistry: Patients Reporting Penicillin Allergy Less Likely to Have Successful Dental Implants
A new study from Dr. Zahra Bagheri and colleagues shows that dental implants are more than twice as likely to fail in people who report an allergy to penicillin and are given alternative antibiotics. Published in Clinical Implant Dentistry and Related Research, the NYU Dentistry study is the first to examine the impact of prescribing antibiotics other than amoxicillin for dental implants. Read more.

Dennis A. Mitchell, DDS, MPH, Columbia University College of Dental Medicine, received ADEA’s premier award—the ADEA Distinguished Service Award. The ADEA Board of Directors presents this award to an ADEA member who has made an extraordinary contribution to dental education through research, teaching or service. Dr. Mitchell is the Executive Vice President (EVP) for University Life and Senior Vice Provost for Faculty Advancement at Columbia University, and Professor of Dental Medicine at Columbia University Medical Center. Read more.
Eastman Institute For Oral Health, University of Rochester Resident Wins International College of Dentists Award
Having always wanted to go on a missions trip, Dr. Shalom Benzaquen got his chance when he happened to spot an opportunity to go to Uganda treating people in impoverished rural communities who have little to no access to dental care. A first year GPR resident at Kingsbrook Jewish Medical Center in New York City at the time, he was about to embark on a journey that would change his life in ways he never expected. Read more.
