Columbia University College of Dental Medicine Scientists Develop New CRISPR Gene Editing Platform for Precision Medicine and Cancer Treatment

Researchers at Columbia University College of Dental Medicine have developed an exosome-based platform, “safeEXO-Cas,” that significantly enhances the delivery of CRISPR/Cas9 genome editing components to specific cells and tissues. CRISPR/Cas9 is a unique technology that enables geneticists and medical researchers to edit parts of the genome by removing, adding or altering sections of the DNA sequence. Read more.

University at Buffalo School of Dental Medicine Partners with TeamSmile, Buffalo Bills to Provide Free Dental Care in Half-Day Event

More than 240 Western New York elementary school students received free dental care while visiting with Billy, the Buffalo Bills mascot, on Tuesday, May 14, at Highmark Stadium in Orchard Park. The University at Buffalo School of Dental Medicine is partnering with TeamSmile, a Kansas City, Mo.-based nonprofit organization that pairs oral health professionals with professional athletic organizations to provide dental care to underserved children in communities across the country. Read more.

Stony Brook School of Dental Medicine Class of 2024 Encouraged to “Make a Difference”

Stony Brook School of Dental Medicine’s Class of 2024 entered the Staller Center of the Arts one last time as students for their convocation ceremony, and they left as the newest wave of dentists to join the workforce, smiling ear to ear alongside their family, friends and classmates. All together, 43 members of the graduating class will begin residency or private practice this summer, approximately two-thirds of whom will do so in New York State. Read more.

NYU College of Dentistry Celebrates Class of 2024

On Monday, May 20, 2024, the NYU Dentistry Class of 2024 – which included more than 500 candidates for the Doctor of Dental Surgery degree, Advanced Education Program certificates, MS degrees in biomaterials and in clinical research, AAS and BS degrees in dental hygiene, and Dental Assisting Program certificates – saw their dreams come true as they received their degrees and certificates before an audience of approximately 5,000 people in The Theater at Madison Square Garden. Read more.

University at Buffalo School of Dental Medicine: Celebrating Student Research

Student excellence in research and innovation was on display at the School of Dental Medicine’s Student Research Day, held in the Center for the Arts on Feb. 23. Seventy-four students presented research on topics ranging from laser-assisted tooth extractions to the gut microbiome’s role in linking obesity to periodontal disease. Though the topics were as diverse as the fields they represented, they shared a common aim to advance oral health and dentistry. Read more.

Stony Brook School of Dental Medicine Welcomes Clinical Assistant Professor of Pediatric Dentistry

Alexandra Makara, DDS, will be joining the School of Dental Medicine as a clinical assistant professor in the Department of Orthodontics and Pediatric Dentistry beginning in August. Originally from Glen Cove, New York, Makara is currently finishing her second and final year in the pediatric dentistry residency program at University of Rochester Eastman Institute for Oral Health. Read more.

Eastman Institute For Oral Health, University of Rochester: Digital Workflows Save Time Without Compromise

Nearly 10 years ago, Dr. Konstantinos Chochlidakis, program director, Eastman Institute for Oral Health’s Prosthodontics Residency Program, started learning more about and conducting research on digital workflows in implant prosthodontics. Together with colleague Dr. Panagiotis Papaspyridakos, associate professor at Tufts University’s School of Dental Medicine, they explored their interest in investigating how digital technology can simplify clinical workflows when treating patients with implant restorations. Read more.

NYU College of Dentistry Names Implant Dentistry Fellowship in Recognition of Major Gift from Alumni Dr. Noel Liu and Dr. Nazish Jafri

NYU Dentistry has received a multimillion gift from alumni Noel Liu, DDS (’07) and Nazish Jafri, DDS (’11) to enhance the College’s programs in implant dentistry and improve access to dental education and care. In recognition of the gift, the College’s advanced training program in implant dentistry will be renamed the Liu Advanced Clinical Fellowship in Implant Dentistry. A portion of the gift—$1 million—will be dedicated to scholarships for dentists enrolling in the fellowship, creating the Liu Scholars. Read more.
